Unconventional Materials: The Abduction of Europa

Problem Solving Project 4: A Day at the Museum

For this project we were asked to pay a visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and select a painting for inspiration. Specifically, to translate the feel of the piece into a wearable covering. Being inspired by allegorical paintings and the stories behind them, I chose to focus on The Abduction of Europa by Noel-Nicolas Copel. I drew my inspiration from the depiction of Europa and Zues in the piece, as shown alongside the final pictures. Being a story about a woman whisked away across an ocean, I wanted the piece to seem light, as if it were ascending upwards towards the gods. I also, of course, wanted to pay tribute to the ocean being crossed.

Materials Used: Paper Towels (dyed with Kool-Aid and Tang juice mixes) placed onto chicken wire as a base for the ascending fabric. The base of the dress was tracing paper colored with acrylic paints and spray paint.
